Ruta dels Ports (Ports Route) – Spain
Spain's legendary smuggler roads
The Ruta dels Ports follows centuries-old smuggler routes through the jagged limestone peaks of Els Ports Natural Park, connecting the medieval stone villages of Morella and Herbés across terrain that once hid Carlist rebels and WWII resistance fighters. The technical sections around Fredes demand low-range and precise line choice as you navigate exposed cliff-edge tracks barely wider than your wheelbase, with the infamous Coll de la Bandera pass testing nerves as much as mechanical grip.
This is moderate-to-difficult terrain requiring high-clearance 4WD with good ground clearance and experienced mountain driving skills. Sharp limestone tears tires, so carry spares and a compressor. Best run April through October when winter storms aren’t dumping snow on the high passes. The reward is stunning views across three regions and authentic Spanish mountain villages where they still speak Catalan and remember when these tracks meant survival, not recreation.
