Hoosier National Forest Forest Road 6042 German Ridge Loop

Limestone karst country that bites back

Difficult

German Ridge Loop drops you into some of the gnarliest terrain in southern Indiana, where Forest Road 6042 snakes through limestone karst country that’ll test your line choice and patience. The main challenge hits early at Lick Creek crossing — a rocky ford that can run knee-deep after spring rains, followed by a steep limestone shelf climb that separates the pretenders from the real deal. Old quarry ruins dot the ridgeline, remnants from when German settlers hauled stone blocks down these same narrow tracks in the 1800s.

This is proper moderate-difficult territory requiring high-clearance 4WD with skid plates and recovery points. Spring and fall offer the best conditions, though summer can get muddy in the hollows. No permits needed on national forest land, but fuel up in English before heading in — cell service drops to nothing once you’re committed. Twenty-three miles of honest Indiana backcountry that’ll remind you why the Hoosier hills earned their reputation for swallowing unprepared rigs.
