Ottawa National Forest Forest Road 2270 Sturgeon River Gorge Circuit

Forest Road 2270 cuts a demanding 12-mile loop through some of Michigan’s most rugged backcountry, following the rim of the Sturgeon River Gorge before dropping into old-growth hemlock stands untouched by logging. The route includes several technical rock ledge climbs where granite slabs create natural steps, and the descent to Silver Falls requires careful tire placement on loose shale. Seasonal washouts from spring snowmelt regularly take out culverts, creating impromptu rock crawling sections that can challenge even experienced drivers.

This is technical 4WD territory — stock vehicles won’t survive the rock ledges or steep grades. Recovery gear mandatory, especially winch and traction aids. Best tackled May through October when stream crossings are manageable. No services for 40 miles in any direction. The reward is access to pristine old-growth forest, spectacular gorge views, and some of the UP’s best brook trout fishing. Dispersed camping along the river, but pack everything in and out — this country doesn’t forgive sloppy camping practices.
