Cache River State Natural Area Spring
This natural spring sits within the Cache River State Natural Area, providing clean water for overlanders working the southern Illinois backcountry. The spring flows consistently year-round, even during dry spells when other water sources dry up. Located near the main access road, it’s easily reached by any vehicle without hiking into the swamp proper.
Access is via Heron Pond Road off Route 37. The spring is well-marked and has been used by hunters and outdoors folks for decades. Water quality is good but treat as standard backcountry practice. Spring flows strongest in early spring, but maintains decent flow even in late summer droughts.
Reliable spring water in cypress swamp country.
