Sangamon River Bottoms Coal Mine Heritage Circuit

Reclaimed coal country roads through river bottoms

Easy

The Sangamon River Bottoms Coal Mine Heritage Circuit follows a maze of abandoned haul roads and service tracks through the reclaimed strip mines south of Springfield, where massive draglines once moved mountains of overburden to reach the coal seams below. The route winds through Sangchris Lake State Park’s backcountry, past flooded strip pits that now harbor bass and waterfowl, and connects to the old Illinois Central Railroad grade that hauled coal to Chicago. The technical challenge comes at Roby’s Ford, where the original mining road crosses Spring Creek through a series of concrete culverts that create axle-deep water holes.

This easy to moderate route is perfect for stock high-clearance vehicles, though 4WD helps in wet conditions when the clay-heavy soil turns to gumbo. Best tackled in late summer through fall when water levels are down and the prairie wildflowers are blooming. No permits required, but respect private property boundaries—some mining roads cross active farmland. Cell service is decent near the lake but fades in the river bottoms. What you discover is an industrial landscape returning to nature, with great camping opportunities and a lesson in how Illinois powered America’s growth.
