Hennepin Canal State Trail Towpath Historic Route

Historic canal towpath across northern Illinois

Easy

The Hennepin Canal Towpath stretches 104 miles from the Illinois River to the Mississippi, following the maintenance roads of America’s last major canal project completed in 1907. This forgotten piece of infrastructure includes 33 locks, multiple aqueducts, and countless engineering marvels now reclaimed by prairie and forest. The route combines gravel towpath sections with connecting county roads, passing through remote stretches where you’ll encounter original lock tender houses and stone aqueducts spanning creeks and rivers.

This is an easy to moderate overland route suitable for any high-clearance vehicle, though some sections get muddy in spring. The full traverse takes 2-3 days with camping available at designated state trail facilities and numerous dispersed spots along the canal. No permits required, but water is scarce so pack plenty. Best tackled in fall when bugs are down and colors are up. What makes this special isn’t technical challenge but the chance to follow a completely unique piece of American infrastructure through landscapes most Illinois residents never see. It’s overlanding through industrial archaeology.
