Narsaq Sheep Farm Historic Circuit

Gentle tour of Greenland's unique sheep country

Easy

The Narsaq sheep farm circuit explores South Greenland’s remarkable agricultural region where sheep ranching thrives despite the Arctic latitude, following centuries-old tracks between traditional Greenlandic farms and Norse ruins. This gentle loop connects several active sheep farms with the abandoned medieval settlement at Gardar, where Erik the Red’s descendants once grazed livestock over 1,000 years ago. The route follows well-maintained farm roads and includes a stop at the Narsaq museum’s outdoor exhibits showcasing traditional farming techniques.

This easy route is suitable for any high-clearance vehicle and can even be attempted by careful drivers in stock SUVs during dry conditions. Best experienced from June through September when farms are active and wildflowers bloom across the tundra pastures. No permits required, but courtesy dictates staying on marked roads and respecting private property. The area offers excellent camping opportunities with landowner permission, and Narsaq provides full services including fuel and groceries. This is Greenland’s gentler side, where agriculture and history blend in scenery that feels more like rural Iceland than the Arctic.
