El Chico National Park Campground
Perched at 8,200 feet in the pine-covered hills of Hidalgo, El Chico offers a surprisingly alpine feel just two hours from Mexico City. The campground has designated sites scattered through oak and pine forest, with fire rings and basic facilities. Nights get legitimately cold even in summer — pack layers. The area sees Mexican family groups on weekends but stays quiet midweek.
Access is via paved road from Pachuca, then 12 kilometers of winding mountain road to the park entrance. The campground road is gravel but passable for any vehicle. Best avoided during heavy rains when the mountain roads get slick. Park entrance fee required.
