Sierra de Álvarez Real de Catorce Circuit

Desert ghost towns and sacred peyote lands

Difficult

This circuit through San Luis Potosí’s high desert connects the ghost town of Real de Catorce with the abandoned mining camps scattered across the Sierra de Álvarez. The route traverses the sacred Wirikuta desert where Huichol pilgrims gather peyote, passing through Villa de Guadalupe, Cedral, and the ruins of silver haciendas that once fed the Spanish Empire. The old Ogarrio Tunnel — a narrow bore through solid rock — serves as the dramatic gateway to Real de Catorce, while desert tracks lead to forgotten mining shafts and colonial-era processing facilities carved into canyon walls.

Difficult rating due to high-altitude desert conditions, loose rock, and navigation challenges across unmarked desert tracks. High-clearance 4WD mandatory, with good navigation skills essential — GPS waypoints drift in the mineral-rich mountains. Dry season (October-April) offers the best conditions, though nights get cold above 9,000 feet. Water is scarce throughout — carry extra. Respect Huichol sacred sites and avoid camping near ceremonial areas. This route delivers solitude, desert landscapes, and a haunting glimpse into Mexico’s colonial mining past.
