Ruta de la Plata Michoacán Mining Circuit

Silver mines and forgotten mountain towns

Moderate

The Ruta de la Plata cuts through Michoacán’s haunted mining district, where mercury and silver once flowed like water through colonial veins. This route connects the monarch butterfly sanctuary town of Angangueo to the cobblestone streets of Tlalpujahua, threading past abandoned mining camps, collapsing haciendas, and flooded open pits that reflect pine forests like broken mirrors. The trail climbs through the Mil Cumbres pine forests before dropping into the Tlalpujahua valley, passing the infamous Dos Estrellas mine disaster site — a sobering reminder of Mexico’s mining legacy.

Moderate difficulty with loose rock sections and seasonal stream crossings that can turn nasty during summer rains. Stock 4WD handles it fine, but expect body damage from overhanging branches and tight spots between mining structures. Winter offers the clearest weather, though you’ll share butterfly viewing areas with crowds. Spring brings wildflowers but muddy conditions. Fuel up in Angangueo — services are sparse once you commit to the mountain sections. This route rewards with solitude, mining history, and some of the finest pine forest driving in central Mexico.
