Trans-Volcanic Belt Highland Traverse

The Trans-Volcanic Belt cuts across central Mexico like a geological scar, and this highland traverse follows the spine between two of the country’s most sacred peaks. Starting from Amecameca, you’ll climb through pine forests and alpine meadows to the Paso de Cortés at 3,600 meters, where Hernán Cortés first glimpsed the Valley of Mexico. The route threads between the smoking cone of Popocatépetl and the sleeping woman silhouette of Iztaccíhuatl, following forestry roads and ancient pilgrimage paths through Izta-Popo National Park’s restricted zones.

This is moderate to difficult depending on conditions, requiring high-clearance 4WD for rocky volcanic sections and muddy forest tracks. Altitude affects both vehicles and drivers — take it slow above 3,000 meters. Best tackled October through April when snow adds alpine beauty but also technical challenges. Permits aren’t required for the traverse roads, but camping restrictions apply in national park boundaries. The payoff is world-class volcano viewing and some of Mexico’s finest high-country camping among sacred peaks that have watched over the Valley of Mexico for millennia.
