Dargo High Plains Road — Dargo to Mount Hotham via the Victorian Alps

Snow gums, shelf roads and Victorian High Country

Moderate

The Dargo High Plains Road is the classic Victorian High Country run. It starts in the little town of Dargo, where the Dargo Hotel is the last cold beer before the climb, and heads up into the Alpine National Park. The road tightens into a narrow shelf with steep drop-offs, loose gravel and long switchbacks up onto the Dargo High Plains. Snow gums twist across the open grassland, and the plains have a long cattlemen’s grazing history that you can feel in the old tracks and clearings. Eventually the road reaches the Great Alpine Road near Mount Hotham, where the ground opens into proper alpine country. You’ll cross creeks, climb through the Great Dividing Range, and see more switchbacks than you’ll want to count.

Treat it as Moderate. It’s well within reach for a stock 4WD, but the exposure, narrow width and slick conditions after rain demand real attention. Passing room is limited, so go slowly and check for oncoming traffic. The road is seasonal and generally closed in winter, so confirm conditions with Parks Victoria before you head out. Carry fuel, water, a proper spare and recovery gear, because cell service is patchy and help is slow to arrive. Camp at designated sites rather than just anywhere. What you get is high-country views, solitude, and a road that feels like old Australia. Have a dirty day.

Frequently asked questions

Can a stock high-clearance 4WD like a Prado or 4Runner do the Dargo High Plains Road?

Yes. A stock high-clearance 4WD with decent tyres and a full-size spare handles it in dry conditions. The hazards are steep grades, narrow shelf sections and loose gravel, not technical obstacles. Caravans and big trailers are a bad idea.

Is the Dargo High Plains Road open in winter?

Usually not. The road is subject to seasonal closure when snow and wet weather hit the high country, and the best window is December to April. Check Parks Victoria for current closure status before you leave, because dates shift with the conditions.

Do I need a permit to drive it or camp along the way?

There's no permit to drive the road. Bush camping in Alpine National Park is generally first-come, first-served and free at designated sites, but fire restrictions and Total Fire Ban days apply. Confirm current rules and site availability on the Parks Victoria page.

What's the hardest part of the drive?

The steep, narrow shelf road climbing out of the Dargo river flats. It has exposed drop-offs, limited passing room, and loose or washed-out gravel after rain. Take it slow, keep right, and give way to uphill traffic where you can.

Will I have cell service, and what should I carry?

Expect spotty coverage at best, with long stretches of nothing. Carry offline maps, a UHF radio, recovery gear, spare fuel and extra water. There are water crossings on the route, so check recent rain before you go, as levels can rise fast.
