Republican River Sand Dunes OHV Complex
Technical sand dunes in the Kansas prairie
Most folks driving Highway 36 across northern Kansas have no idea they’re passing some of the gnarliest sand terrain between Colorado and Michigan, but this OHV complex along the Republican River proves Kansas isn’t all wheat fields. The route tackles steep sand hills deposited by centuries of wind and flood cycles, with technical climbs that’ll test traction control and driver skill equally. Local ATV clubs have developed a network of marked trails ranging from easy riverside cruising to expert-level sand hill climbs that separate the pretenders from the contenders.
This is technical 4WD territory that demands good sand-driving technique, proper tire pressure management, and recovery gear – getting stuck here means a long wait for help in some of the most remote country Kansas offers. Best conditions are fall through early spring when the sand is firm; summer heat makes this place brutally tough on both machines and drivers. Primitive camping is allowed throughout the area, and the small town of St. Francis provides the nearest fuel and supplies 15 miles south. It’s proof that Kansas can humble even experienced desert drivers.

Frequently asked questions
Can I run this trail with regular all-terrain tires?
You need sand tires or at minimum aggressive all-terrains aired down to 15-18 PSI. Regular tires will get you stuck in the deep sand sections.
Is the Republican River Sand Dunes complex open year-round?
Best access is October through April when sand is more compact. Summer brings deep, loose sand that's extremely difficult even for experienced drivers.
Do I need permits or fees to ride the sand dunes?
Check with Kansas Parks and Wildlife for current regulations as portions cross private land. Some areas may require landowner permission.
What's the hardest obstacle on this trail?
The steepest dune faces combined with loose sand create momentum-critical climbs where getting stuck means digging out or winching.
Where can I camp and is there water available?
Dispersed camping is allowed in designated areas, but bring all your own water. The Republican River crossings are not suitable for drinking even when filtered.
