Douz to Ksar Ghilane — Grand Erg Oriental Piste

Sahara sand to a Roman fort and hot spring

Moderate

Douz is where the pavement quits being polite. South of town you drop onto a sand piste and push into the Jbil National Park fringe and the northern Grand Erg Oriental. The track runs through dune fields, salt flats, and long stretches of soft pistes. Most drivers follow the old pipeline route and aim for Bir Soltane and the Pipeline Piste. The finish is the oasis of Ksar Ghilane, where a hot spring seeps out of the sand beside the ruins of Tisavar, a Roman frontier fort. The route is short on paper, but soft sand makes it feel long.

Plan for sand driving. You want a 4×4 with low range, tires aired down to around 15 psi, a compressor, recovery boards, a shovel, and a tow strap. Don’t attempt it solo in summer, when temperatures run past 110°F and a breakdown gets serious. October through April is the window. Fuel up in Douz and carry extra water. Cell coverage is spotty and fades fast. Stick to established tracks and don’t wander off alone. You get real dune work, a proper Saharan camp, and a soak in a hot spring after a hard day. Have a dirty day.

Frequently asked questions

Can a stock 4x4 like a 4Runner or Land Cruiser do Douz to Ksar Ghilane?

Yes. A stock 4WD with low range and decent all-terrain tires handles it if you air down to roughly 15-20 psi. Carry sand boards, a shovel, a tire deflator and compressor, and a tow strap. A 2WD or AWD crossover will get stuck in the soft sections.

Is the Douz to Ksar Ghilane piste doable in summer?

Technically yes, but don't. Daytime temps regularly top 45°C (113°F), which risks overheating your engine and getting you heatstroke if you're stuck. The best window is October to April, when days are workable and nights run cold, sometimes near freezing in midwinter.

Do I need a permit or pay a fee to drive this route?

The route runs through Jbil National Park, which charges an entry fee, so bring Tunisian dinars in cash. Ksar Ghilane itself is generally open to travelers, but the military zones further south and toward the Libyan and Algerian borders require special authorization. Confirm current rules in Douz before you go.

What's the hardest part of the drive?

Soft sand through the dune sections of the Grand Erg Oriental's northern edge, where the track gets loose and churned up. Momentum and low tire pressure matter more than clearance. The piste can also fork and fade, so you can end up on a worse line than you planned.

Can I do the 125 km run on one tank, and can I camp along the way?

Fuel up fully in Douz, since sand driving burns much more fuel than the odometer suggests, and carry extra for the return. Don't count on fuel being available at Ksar Ghilane. Dispersed camping in the dunes is allowed and cell service is spotty, so carry a GPS with the track loaded, extra water, and ideally travel with a second vehicle.
