Kimball County Chalk Bluffs Fossil Road

Hunt fossils in Nebraska's badland canyons

Moderate

This rough ranch road climbs through the exposed Brule Formation chalk bluffs west of Kimball, following old paleontology survey routes from the 1960s. The track becomes increasingly technical as it winds up Lodgepole Creek canyon, with loose shale sections and steep climbs that separate the stock trucks from serious 4x4s. The highlight is Fossil Ridge, where white chalk cliffs reveal ancient mammal bones and the occasional complete skull – though collecting requires permits from the University of Nebraska.

Moderate to difficult depending on recent weather, requiring true 4WD with low range for the steeper ascents and good underbody protection for the rocky sections. Best attempted April through October when the clay isn’t pure soup. Bring plenty of water and food – cell service is nonexistent and the nearest town is 25 miles. This is serious backcountry that rewards the prepared with world-class geology and legitimate fossil hunting opportunities.
