Calamus Reservoir State Recreation Area

Hidden gem reservoir in the heart of the Sandhills with fishing, swimming, and views of rolling prairie grassland.

Twenty-four developed campsites spread along the north shore of this 5,100-acre reservoir, tucked into the rolling hills northwest of Burwell. Half the sites are lakefront with direct water access. The setting feels remote — endless Sandhills prairie stretching in all directions, with cottonwoods and cedars along the water. Popular with anglers chasing walleye, bass, and northern pike. Sites have fire rings and picnic tables, though shade is limited except near the shoreline trees.

Access via Highway 96 then 8 miles north on gravel roads that can get soft after rain. The lake level fluctuates significantly with drought cycles, sometimes leaving boat ramps high and dry. Open year-round but water is shut off October through April. Best fishing is spring and fall when the walleye are running.
