Nebraska Sandhills Two-Track Explorer

Ghost ranch two-tracks through endless sandhills

Difficult

The Nebraska Sandhills Two-Track Explorer follows a maze of century-old ranch roads and cattle trails that crisscross 85 miles of pristine grassland between Thedford and Mullen. These forgotten two-tracks connect abandoned homestead sites, working windmills, and remote stock tanks scattered across the rolling dunes. The route includes the challenging Willow Creek ford at mile 32, where the sandy approach can trap unwary drivers, and passes the ruins of the old Brownlee Ranch headquarters.

Rated difficult due to deep sand sections, unmarked intersections, and potential for getting lost in the maze of similar-looking trails. A GPS with offline maps is essential, and aired-down tires are mandatory for the sand. Best tackled April through October, avoiding spring green-up when ranchers restrict access. This is pure Nebraska backcountry – endless grass, huge skies, and the kind of solitude that reminds you why they call it the Great Plains. Carry extra water and fuel for the full loop.
