Kaupo Road
Maui's forgotten coast through ranch and lava country.
Kaupo Road traces Maui’s wild southeast shore through landscape that time forgot, where black lava meets turquoise Pacific and ancient Hawaiian settlements dot the coastline. This remote route winds past Huialoha Church, built in 1859 from volcanic rock, before climbing through Kaupo Ranch’s rolling pastures toward Haleakala’s slopes. The road alternates between rough gravel, washouts, and brief paved sections, with stream crossings that can turn dangerous during storms and stunning coastal views that stretch toward the Big Island.
High-clearance 4WD recommended, especially after rains when streams run high and mud turns treacherous. The route stays passable year-round for capable vehicles, but locals know to avoid it during kona storms. No services exist along this 37-mile stretch—bring water, food, and emergency supplies. Charles Lindbergh’s grave sits near the road’s end at remote Palapala Ho’omau Church. This journey delivers authentic old Hawaii, where you’ll see more cattle than tourists and experience Maui’s untamed backcountry spirit.
