Kipahulu Valley Four Wheel Drive Road
Maui's forgotten ranch road to the wild coast
The Kipahulu Valley Four Wheel Drive Road cuts through some of Maui’s most isolated ranch country, winding from the Hana Highway down toward the ocean through working cattle ranches. You’ll cross several seasonal streams and navigate rocky sections while dodging loose cattle on this little-known route that parallels the famous Pools of Oheo. The road drops through native kiawe forest and offers glimpses of the rugged coastline where few tourists venture.
This is a moderate trail requiring high-clearance 4WD, especially during winter months when stream crossings can become challenging. The route passes through private ranch land with some public access, so respect gates and property lines. Best tackled during dry season (April-October) when streams are low. No services or cell coverage once you leave the highway. The reward is solitude on one of Maui’s most authentic backcountry routes, plus access to secluded black sand beaches at the road’s end.
