Polipoli Spring State Recreation Area

High-elevation camp in Maui's upcountry forest with misty mornings and eucalyptus groves at 6,200 feet.

Tucked into the cloud forest on Haleakala’s southwest slope, this small campground offers a completely different Hawaii experience. Ten sites spread through towering eucalyptus and redwood trees, with fire rings and picnic tables. Mornings are often shrouded in mist, and nights can drop into the 40s — pack layers and rain gear.

The final 10 miles of Waipoli Road are rough dirt with some washouts, requiring high-clearance. It’s a world away from beach crowds, with hiking trails threading through the forest. Reserve ahead through Hawaii State Parks — this place fills up with locals escaping the heat below.
