Behind the Rocks Trail
Slickrock maze threading towering sandstone fins
Behind the Rocks delivers the quintessential Moab slickrock experience, weaving through a maze of towering Navajo Sandstone fins that rise like ancient skyscrapers from the desert floor. The main route follows established 4WD tracks across undulating slickrock domes and through narrow corridors, with the iconic Picture Frame Arch serving as a popular waypoint and photo opportunity. Multiple spurs branch off the main trail, including the challenging Pritchett Canyon connection that separates casual adventurers from serious rock crawlers.
The trail rates moderate overall but can spike to difficult on optional technical sections like Rocker Knocker. A stock 4WD with decent ground clearance handles the main route fine, though rock sliders and skid plates earn their keep on the exposed slickrock. Spring through fall offers the best conditions, avoiding winter ice and summer’s brutal heat. No permits required, but stick to established routes to protect the fragile cryptobiotic soil. Pack plenty of water and expect to share this playground with mountain bikers and hikers—it’s Moab’s backyard training ground that delivers big scenery without the commitment of a multi-day expedition.
