Munro Trail to Lana’ihale Summit
Lanai's highest point with five-island views
The Munro Trail winds 12.8 miles from Lanai City to Lana’ihale, the island’s 3,370-foot summit named after pineapple baron George Munro who planted the Norfolk pines that still line portions of this red dirt road. You’ll climb through dense stands of Cook pines and ironwood trees, passing the Koloiki Ridge overlook where you can see Maui’s Haleakala crater looming across the channel. The final push to Lana’ihale requires navigating increasingly rutted terrain and occasional washouts.
This is a moderate trail requiring high-clearance 4WD, especially after Lanai’s winter rains turn the red dirt into slippery clay. Dry season (April through October) offers the best conditions and clearest summit views. Bring extra water, snacks, and rain gear—mountain weather changes fast. The payoff is standing on Lanai’s rooftop with panoramic views of Maui, Molokai, Kahoolawe, the Big Island, and on exceptionally clear days, Oahu in the distance.
