Vedauwoo Glen Road
Granite giants and geological chaos
The granite monoliths of Vedauwoo rise from Wyoming’s high plains like sleeping giants, and Glen Road threads through their base where glacial erratics the size of houses create a geological wonderland. This route starts at the main Vedauwoo Recreation Area and winds north through Medicine Bow National Forest, passing iconic formations like Turtle Rock before connecting to Forest Road 700. The real challenge comes from navigating around massive granite boulders that force you to pick careful lines through gaps that seem impossibly tight.
Rated moderate for stock high-clearance 4WD, though some sections demand careful spotting and precise wheel placement. Summer through fall offers the best conditions, though afternoon thunderstorms can make granite surfaces slick. No permits required, but dispersed camping is available throughout the area. What you get is access to some of Wyoming’s most unique geology and excellent rock climbing, plus solitude that’s rare this close to I-80. Carry extra water — the high desert environment at 8,000+ feet can dehydrate you fast.
