Haida Gwaii Logging Road Circuit

The Haida Gwaii Logging Road Circuit follows decommissioned forestry roads through some of the last intact temperate rainforest in North America, crossing the islands once known as the Queen Charlottes. These overgrown logging roads thread between massive western red cedars and Sitka spruces, some over 1,000 years old, while connecting remote beaches where Haida Nation totem poles stand guard over ancient village sites. The circuit includes challenging sections through the Yakoun River valley and access to remote hot springs at Gandll K’in Gwaay.yaay (Hotspring Island), where natural thermal pools overlook Hecate Strait.

This moderate-to-difficult route requires high-clearance 4WD due to washouts, fallen trees, and steep coastal grades. Weather changes rapidly, so pack rain gear and expect soggy conditions year-round – summer (June-September) offers the best road conditions and wildlife viewing. No services exist on remote sections, necessitating self-sufficiency for fuel, food, and emergency situations. Ferry access from Prince Rupert requires advance booking. The reward is access to some of Canada’s most pristine coastal wilderness, world-class salmon fishing, and cultural sites that connect visitors to thousands of years of Haida heritage.
