Needles Highway

Granite spires and white-knuckle tunnels

Moderate

The Needles Highway (SD-87) isn’t your typical dirt trail — it’s 14 miles of nerve-wracking blacktop that’ll have you questioning your rig’s width measurements. Threading between towering granite spires and through tunnels barely wider than a full-size truck, this engineering marvel carved through Custer State Park connects Sylvan Lake to the Junction with US-16A. The infamous Needle’s Eye tunnel measures just 8’4″ wide and 12’0″ high — scrape marks on the walls tell the story of drivers who miscalculated.

Any vehicle can technically run this route, but RVs and wide rigs need serious consideration of the tunnel dimensions. No permits required since it’s a state highway, but expect heavy tourist traffic May through October. The payoff is dramatic: cathedral spires, wildlife viewing opportunities, and some of the most photographed granite formations in the Black Hills. Best tackled early morning or late afternoon when the light hits the needles just right and the crowds thin out.

Frequently asked questions

Can my RV or wide truck make it through the tunnels?

Only if you're under 8'4" wide and 11'3" tall. The tunnels are carved tight through solid granite with zero forgiveness for oversized rigs.

Is Needles Highway open in winter?

Typically closed November through April due to snow and ice. Check with Custer State Park for current conditions before making the drive.

Do I need to pay to drive Needles Highway?

Yes, you need a Custer State Park entrance license. Daily passes run about $20 per vehicle, annual passes available for frequent visitors.

How scary are the tunnel sections really?

They're genuinely tight with blind curves and oncoming traffic. Take your time, use your horn, and don't attempt if you're uncomfortable with narrow spaces.

Can I find camping along the route?

Several campgrounds within Custer State Park including Sylvan Lake and Game Lodge. Reserve ahead during peak season as spots fill up fast in summer.
