Thompson Pass Road (Forest Road 62)
Kootenai high country via the hardest pass in Montana
Forest Road 62 climbs from the Yaak River valley to Thompson Pass at 7,500 feet, gaining nearly 4,000 vertical feet in just 12 miles of punishing switchbacks and loose rock. This forgotten mining road was hacked into the Purcell Mountains during the 1930s silver boom, and it shows — sections wash out annually, leaving exposed bedrock and boulders that’ll test your undercarriage clearance. The final push to the pass involves technical rock crawling with mandatory spotting, especially around the infamous ‘Staircase’ section at mile 9.
This is expert-level territory demanding modified 4WD with rock sliders, winch, and full recovery kit. Articulation and approach angles matter more than horsepower here. Accessible only July through September, and even then afternoon storms can make the route impassable. No permits needed, but inform the Yaak Ranger Station of your plans — cell service vanishes immediately. The payoff is massive: panoramic views into three mountain ranges and some of Montana’s finest alpine camping. Pack extra fuel, spare parts, and serious mechanical skills.
