Strada delle 52 Gallerie (Road of 52 Tunnels)

WWI military road through 52 hand-carved tunnels

Moderate

The 52 tunnels blasted through Monte Pasubio’s sheer rock face between 1917-1918 still echo with the desperation of Italian sappers racing to supply the front lines. This impossibly engineered road spirals up the mountain’s south face through hand-carved galleries, some so tight your mirrors nearly kiss stone, others opening to heart-stopping drops into the Agno Valley 6,000 feet below. The original military grade tops out at the Pasubio summit at 6,739 feet, passing the haunting remains of trenches, barbed wire, and artillery positions frozen in time.

Moderate difficulty demands high-clearance 4WD for loose scree sections and narrow tunnel passages barely wider than a full-size truck. Stone damage is guaranteed — bring spare tires and rock sliders. Best tackled June through October when snow clears; winter attempts are suicide missions. No permits needed but fuel up in Schio beforehand — the nearest services are 25 miles down the mountain. This isn’t just a drive, it’s a pilgrimage through Europe’s most brutal engineering feat.
