Glacier Rim Drive (Going-to-the-Sun Road Extension)
Hidden Glacier backcountry beyond the crowds
Beyond the tourist traffic of Going-to-the-Sun Road lies this lesser-known extension that climbs from Logan Pass toward Hidden Lake Overlook via old park service maintenance roads. The route parallels the Continental Divide through subalpine meadows before dropping into the Sperry Creek drainage. At mile 8, you’ll hit the remains of the old Sperry Chalet supply road—now just two granite ruts through avalanche debris and meltwater channels.
Moderate difficulty for the gravel sections, but becomes technical where creek crossings meet loose talus slopes. Stock 4WD works fine with good ground clearance, though the final 4 miles require careful line choice through boulder fields. Open July through September only—snow blocks access well into summer. No services whatsoever, and cell coverage dies at Logan Pass. Worth it for solitude in one of the most scenic corners of Glacier, with dispersed camping possible at Sperry Creek junction.
