Big Creek Road (Forest Road 370)

Big Creek Road follows the old supply route that fed mining camps deep in what’s now the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness. Starting near Yellow Pine, this historic track parallels Big Creek through some of Idaho’s most pristine backcountry, passing remnants of dredges and cabins from the 1900s gold rush. The road ends at Cabin Creek Guard Station, where pack trains once loaded supplies for the remote mining districts deeper in the wilderness.
The 32-mile route rates as moderate difficulty — mostly good gravel with some rocky sections and seasonal washouts near creek crossings. Any stock SUV with decent clearance can handle it, but the remoteness demands preparation. Best driven June through September when snow clears from higher elevations. No permits required, but this is bear country, so secure your food. Multiple dispersed camping spots along Big Creek offer solitude that’s increasingly rare in Idaho’s backcountry.
