Big Creek Road
Wilderness access through historic mining country.
Big Creek Road (Forest Service Road 413) punches 52 miles into the heart of the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness, following old mining routes that once served gold camps scattered along Big Creek. The road starts near Yellow Pine and winds through dense forest before opening into the broad Big Creek drainage, where you’ll cross the creek multiple times on questionable bridges that date back to the mining era.
This is a moderate to difficult route requiring 4WD and good ground clearance for the creek crossings and rocky sections past Cabin Creek Guard Station. Best accessed July through September when water levels drop, though early season can mean muddy conditions. No fuel or services once you leave Yellow Pine, so come prepared with extra gas and recovery gear. The reward is access to some of Idaho’s most pristine wilderness country and historic mining sites that few people ever see.
