Spunky Canyon Dispersed Camping

Hidden canyon camping along a seasonal creek with dramatic rock formations and Joshua trees in the Mojave Desert foothills.

A scenic dirt road winds through Spunky Canyon offering multiple dispersed camping opportunities among unique granite boulder formations and scattered Joshua trees. Sites vary from tight spots between rocks perfect for single vehicles to more open areas suitable for small groups. Several established fire rings exist, and the seasonal creek provides water during wet years (always filter). Rock climbers frequent the area for the quality granite.

Access via Spunky Canyon Road north of CA-14 near Mojave. The road requires high-clearance and can be rough in spots with loose rock and sand washes. Flash flood potential exists during storms. Popular with rock hounds and climbers, so weekend solitude isn’t guaranteed. Best avoided during summer heat.
