Backway to Kings Canyon
Sierra backcountry bypass to Kings Canyon country.
The Backway to Kings Canyon traces 60 miles of Forest Service roads from the Highway 180 turnoff near Dunlap, winding through dense pine forests and granite country to emerge at Hume Lake in Sequoia National Forest. This route follows old logging roads established in the early 1900s, passing through the heart of what locals call the “back door” to Kings Canyon country. The trail climbs from chaparral foothills through mixed conifer forests, offering spectacular views of the Sierra crest and access to dozens of primitive camping spots far from the crowds hitting the main park entrances.
While not technical, this route demands high-clearance 4WD and patience — the road surface varies from packed dirt to loose rock, with occasional water crossings and steep grades that’ll test your cooling system. Best run May through October when snow clears the higher elevations, though early season can be muddy from snowmelt. No permits required for the forest roads, but fuel up in Dunlap as there’s nothing until you hit Hume Lake. Cell service is spotty at best. It’s a proper wilderness experience that shows you the Sierra without the national park crowds and entry fees.
