Dugas Road to Castle Hot Springs
Desert track to legendary hot springs ruins
Dugas Road winds 16 miles through classic Sonoran Desert from Lake Pleasant to the historic Castle Hot Springs ruins, where millionaires once soaked in natural thermal pools. The route crosses several technical washes, with the most challenging section at mile 8 where Dugas Wash requires careful line selection through loose sand and embedded rocks. Desert ironwood and massive saguaro cacti line the narrow track as it climbs through rolling bajadas toward the Hieroglyphic Mountains.
This moderate trail demands high-clearance 4WD for the wash crossings and rocky sections, though it’s manageable for most stock vehicles with careful driving. Best tackled October through April when temperatures are bearable—summer heat makes this route dangerous. The hot springs are closed to public access, but the journey offers excellent dispersed camping spots and spectacular desert scenery. Carry plenty of water and let someone know your plans—cell service disappears completely once you leave the main road.
