Rising 650 feet above the desert floor, Kelso Dunes are the largest sand dune system in the Mojave Desert. The fine quartz sand creates the famous “singing” or “booming” sounds when disturbed, and the climb to the top rewards with panoramic views across the Preserve. Early morning and late evening light turns the dunes golden, making it a photographer’s paradise.
Access is via a 3-mile dirt road from Kelso Depot, suitable for any vehicle in dry conditions but can become treacherous when wet. No shade, water, or facilities at the dunes themselves. The hike to the summit takes 1-2 hours and can be brutal in summer heat — spring and fall visits are ideal.
