Seljavallalaug Geothermal Pool

This secluded geothermal pool sits in a dramatic valley beneath Eyjafjallajökull glacier, fed by natural hot springs that maintain the water around 20-30°C year-round. Built in 1923, it’s one of Iceland’s oldest swimming pools, now largely abandoned but still maintained by locals. The rectangular concrete pool holds about 25 people, though you’ll often have it to yourself outside summer months.

Park at the small gravel area off Route 242 and hike 15 minutes across moorland and stream crossings. Road can be rough in winter weather, and the pool itself gets silted after storms — locals clean it irregularly. No facilities, no fees, clothing optional culture. Best accessed April through October when the access road is most reliable.
