Fjallabak Nature Reserve Route (F225)
Rainbow mountains and volcanic fury
F225 cuts through the heart of Fjallabak Nature Reserve, where rainbow-colored rhyolite peaks rise from black sand deserts like something from an alien planet. This technical route connects Landmannalaugar’s famous hot springs to the massive Eldgjá volcanic fissure—a 40-kilometer crack in the earth that erupted in 934 AD and remains one of the largest volcanic events in recorded history. The road snakes through Frostastaðavatn lake area and crosses multiple unbridged rivers, including the notorious Skaftá crossing where glacier-fed waters can rise without warning.
This ranks as difficult to expert depending on conditions—river crossings can be thigh-deep and change hourly with glacial melt. Proper 4WD with diff locks recommended; many rental companies prohibit this route entirely. Late July through early September only, and even then weather can close it instantly. Carry recovery gear, extra food, and emergency communication. But push through the challenges and you’ll experience Iceland’s most spectacular highland scenery—steaming fumaroles, obsidian fields, and mountains painted in impossible shades of orange, yellow, and green that photographers spend lifetimes trying to capture.
