Westfjords Backcountry Circuit (F-roads)

Iceland's forgotten frontier peninsula

Difficult

The Westfjords peninsula juts into the North Atlantic like Iceland’s forgotten finger, and this network of F-roads threads through its most remote corners. The circuit connects Ísafjörður to the Latrabjarg bird cliffs via mountain passes that see more Arctic foxes than tourists, passing abandoned farms at Hesteyri and the dramatic Dynjandi waterfall cascading down terraced basalt cliffs. Key routes include F624 over Steingrímsfjarðarheiði pass and F619 to Látrabjarg—Europe’s westernmost point where millions of puffins nest on 400-meter sea cliffs.

This rates difficult due to narrow, rocky mountain roads with steep grades and exposure—not for the faint of heart. Stock 4WD with good ground clearance essential; some sections require careful tire placement on loose shale. July through early September offers the only reliable weather window. Pack extra food and fuel—services are sparse to nonexistent once you leave the main settlements. The reward is Iceland’s most isolated region, where you’ll have dramatic coastlines, historic whaling stations, and endless bird colonies entirely to yourself.
