Chisos Basin Campground — Big Bend National Park
Chisos Basin sits in a high bowl ringed by volcanic peaks, a good 20 degrees cooler than the desert floor at Rio Grande Village. It has roughly 60 sites, mostly tight, with a mix of tent-friendly pads and a few that can handle small rigs. Trailheads for The Window, Lost Mine, and the South Rim start right here. Expect crowds in spring break and holiday weeks. Reserve ahead, especially from November through April, and check the NPS site for current site and vehicle-length rules.
The road in is paved but steep, with sharp switchbacks. NPS restricts larger trailers and RVs, so verify limits before hauling anything long. There’s a camper store and lodge nearby for basic supplies, but stock up in Study Butte or Marathon before you head in. Black bears and mountain lions live here, so use the food lockers and keep a clean camp. Have a dirty day.
