The trail is barely a mile and a half round-trip, but it leads to something genuinely spectacular — towering canyon walls that dwarf everything around them. The Rio Grande flows through the bottom, marking the international border, while the limestone cliffs create a natural cathedral. Most visitors turn around at the overlook, but you can scramble down to the river if water levels permit.
Access requires driving the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive to its end — about 30 miles of paved road from the main park area. The parking area fills up during peak season, and afternoon light is best for photography. Bring water even for this short hike; the desert doesn’t forgive oversight.
