Terlingua Ghost Town

Abandoned mercury mining town turned quirky desert outpost, serving as the unofficial gateway to Big Bend backcountry adventures.

Terlingua started as a mercury mining boomtown in the early 1900s and died when the mines played out. What’s left is a fascinating collection of adobe ruins, a famous chili cook-off site, and a handful of businesses that keep the ghost town spirit alive. The old cemetery, company store ruins, and mining structures tell the story of boom and bust in the Chihuahuan Desert.

Today it’s the closest thing to civilization for Big Bend overlanders, with a few restaurants, a general store, and the legendary Starlight Theatre. It’s also the staging area for River Road East runs and other Big Bend backcountry routes. The place has a end-of-the-world vibe that either captivates you or creeps you out — usually both.
