Atlatl Rock Campground — Valley of Fire State Park
Atlatl Rock is one of the two developed campgrounds in Valley of Fire State Park, set among the Aztec sandstone outcrops that give the place its name. The petroglyph panel it’s named for is a short climb up a metal staircase, and the rest of the park’s scenic loop is minutes away. Sites are built for tents and RVs, and the red rock walls throw serious color at sunrise and sunset. It’s a popular first or last night for anyone running the Mojave, and weekends in cooler months get busy.
Summers are brutal, with triple-digit heat that makes midday hiking a bad idea. Spring and fall are the window. Access is paved from the Valley of Fire Highway, so no special rig is needed. Reservations are available through Nevada State Parks, but check current rules and fees before you go, since they change. Pack your own firewood and respect the park’s fire rules. Have a dirty day.
Petroglyphs and red rock, an hour from Vegas.
