Idlewild Campground — Ochoco National Forest
Idlewild sits at around 4,200 feet in the Ochoco National Forest along Ochoco Creek, about 25 miles east of Prineville on US-26. You get ponderosa pines overhead, a creek nearby, vault toilets, and hand-pump drinking water — nothing fancy, but everything you actually need after a day on washboard. Sites are spaced well enough that you’re not sleeping in your neighbor’s lap. It fills up on summer weekends but mid-week you’ll likely have room to breathe.
Access is straightforward — paved to the campground. It’s a legitimate staging point for rigs heading into the Ochoco high country or linking east toward Burns and the BDR Central Segment. Season runs roughly late May through October depending on snowpack. Confirm water is active before you commit — pump status varies.
