Haines Chilkoot Lake State Recreation Site Campground
Chilkoot Lake State Recreation Site sits at the far end of Lutak Road, about 10 miles north of Haines, where the Chilkoot River drains into tidewater. The campground hugs the eastern shore of the lake with sites tucked into old-growth spruce and hemlock — bear country, thick and real. It’s the de facto staging camp for rigs gearing up for the Tatshenshini-Alsek corridor. Expect 32 sites, vault toilets, a boat launch, and brown bear activity especially during salmon runs in late summer. Vibe is wilderness, not manicured.
Access via Lutak Road is paved all the way — any vehicle gets in. Sites fill fast in July and August; reservations through the Alaska State Parks system are strongly recommended in peak season. No hookups, no showers. Cell service is marginal at best. Fire restrictions apply in dry years — check with Alaska State Parks before you go. This is your last reliable camp with a trash service before the wilderness corridor swallows you.
Last developed camp before the wilderness hits.
