Lake Powhatan Recreation Area Campground — Pisgah National Forest
Lake Powhatan sits about 8 miles southwest of Asheville off NC-191, making it one of the most accessible developed camps in Pisgah National Forest without feeling like a suburb campground. You’ve got 97 sites spread through mature hardwood and pine, a swimming beach on the lake, flush toilets, and hot showers — rare in national forest camps. It fills fast on summer weekends, especially with the mountain bike crowd hammering the nearby Bent Creek trails. Reservations through Recreation.gov are strongly recommended May through October. Fire rings at each site; fire restrictions apply during dry spells, check ahead.
Access is paved all the way in off NC-191 — any rig can make it. The campground sits at roughly 2,200 feet, making it a comfortable base for exploring the western Pisgah corridor east toward Asheville or west deeper into the forest. Cell service is partial to spotty depending on carrier. Closes seasonally, typically late October through late March.
