Lordsburg KOA Journey — Hidalgo County Desert Stopover
Lordsburg KOA sits right off I-10 at the edge of the Chihuahuan Desert, making it the logical staging point for overlanders hitting the Trans-America Trail’s southern New Mexico boot heel push toward Antelope Wells. It’s not wilderness — it’s a working KOA with paved pull-throughs, tent sites, a pool, showers, and a coin laundry. None of that’s a bad thing when you’ve got 200 miles of dirt ahead of you and need a real shower before the border run. Sites are laid out on flat desert gravel with decent spacing. It gets busy during snowbird season (October through March) but rarely fills mid-week in summer.
Access is dead simple — exit I-10 at Lordsburg, facility is signed from the highway. Lordsburg itself has fuel, a handful of restaurants, and basic resupply. Last reliable water and dump station before Antelope Wells. Verify reservation options ahead — walk-ins are usually fine outside peak season.
Last hot shower before the border run.
