Kelso Depot Visitor Center — Mojave National Preserve Desert Railroad Hub
Kelso Depot sits dead center in Mojave National Preserve and is the single most useful stop on the full Mojave Road crossing. Built in 1924 for Union Pacific crews, the Mission Revival building was restored by the NPS and now houses a full visitor center with exhibits on the railroad era, desert ecology, and Preserve history. Rangers here know current road conditions better than any app — ask them about Mojave Road washouts, Government Holes water status, and seasonal closures before you push west. Drinking water is available at the building. Toilets on site.
The depot is surrounded by the Kelso Dunes to the southwest — worth a side trip if you have daylight. Cell service in Kelso is essentially zero. The building is typically open daily in cooler months; hours shrink or close entirely in summer heat. Verify hours with the Preserve before planning around it. Fuel is not available here — nearest reliable fuel is Baker, 34 miles north.
