Birdsville Track — Marree to Birdsville via the Tirari Desert and Diamantina River Floodplains (Classic Outback Full Traverse)

The drovers' road. Still earns its reputation.

Difficult

Drovers pushed cattle along this corridor from Queensland’s Channel Country to the railhead at Marree from the 1870s onward, and the bones of that era are still out here — ruins at Mungerannie, the lone pub at the halfway mark, and the constant reminder that the next fuel is a long way off. The track runs 517 kilometres from Marree, South Australia, north to Birdsville in Queensland, crossing gibber plains, soft red dunes of the Tirari Desert, and the braided clay channels of the Diamantina River near the northern end. Mungerannie Hotel at the 207 km mark is the only fuel and water stop. The Cooper Creek crossing north of Innamincka is not on this track but the country feels just as unforgiving.

After any rain, sections become impassable — full stop. This is a high-clearance 4WD track in dry conditions and a potentially life-threatening trap in wet ones. Carry a minimum of 20 litres of extra water per person, HF radio or satellite communicator, and enough fuel to cover the full distance with a reserve. The best window is April to September. No permit is required from the South Australian side. You get big sky, absolute silence, and the earned satisfaction of finishing one of the continent’s genuinely classic outback runs.

Frequently asked questions

Can a stock LandCruiser 200 Series handle the Birdsville Track without a lift?

Yes, a stock 200 Series with standard clearance is adequate for normal conditions. Where it bites you is in deep sand sections through the Tirari Desert after rain or wind — a quality set of all-terrains and the ability to air down to 18-20 PSI matters more than a lift here.

What's the best time of year to run it and what happens if you go in summer?

April through September is the window — mild temps, manageable track conditions, and the Diamantina floodplains are passable. Summer (December–February) means 45°C+ heat, flash flooding risk, and the real possibility of getting stuck for days waiting for floodwaters to recede. People have died out here underestimating summer.

Do you need a permit or park pass to drive the Birdsville Track?

No permit is required to drive the track itself — it's a public road managed by SA and QLD transport departments. If you detour into Munga-Thirri (Simpson Desert) National Park or other reserves adjacent to the route, an SA National Parks pass is required for SA sections.

What's the hardest section and what actually makes it hard?

The Tirari Desert section south of Mungerannie is the roughest — corrugations can be brutal, sand drifts cross the track after wind events, and there's genuinely nothing out there if something goes wrong. The Diamantina floodplains near Birdsville can turn to impassable bog after any significant rain, sometimes closing the track for days.

How much fuel do you need to carry and where can you actually refuel?

Mungerannie Hotel (roughly 200km from Marree) is your only fuel stop mid-route — confirm it's operational before you leave because it's the only option. Carry enough fuel for at least 600km to cover Marree to Birdsville plus a margin, as track conditions can spike consumption significantly in deep sand.
