King Leopold Ranges — Western Escarpment Lookout

Point of Interest

The western face of the King Leopold Ranges is a geological gut-punch. Ancient Precambrian sandstone ridgelines stack up abruptly from the surrounding plains, and the road through Inglis Gap cuts right into the heart of it. Pull off at any of the high points along the range crossing and you’re looking at a landscape that hasn’t changed in spirit since the drovers pushed cattle through here a century ago. No facilities, no signage worth noting — just the escarpment, the spinifex, and the silence.

This section of the Gibb sits between Derby and Imintji, accessible in dry season (typically May through October) with a capable 4WD. The range crossing involves rocky climbs and loose sections — high clearance essential, 4WD strongly advised. Road condition varies year to year; check with Main Roads WA before heading out. Water is not available here — carry everything you need.
