Alsek River — Dry Bay Confluence Viewpoint
Dry Bay is the wild terminus of the Alsek River, where glacially milky water meets the Gulf of Alaska after carving through the heart of Tatshenshini-Alsek Provincial Park and Glacier Bay National Preserve. From the gravel bars and coastal flats here you’re looking at a braided delta flanked by the St. Elias peaks — no roads in from the coast, no services, no crowds. It’s the endpoint of one of the planet’s most serious wilderness river runs, and for overlanders pushing this corridor, it’s the geographical target: the place the whole route points toward.
Access via the Tatshenshini River Road from Haines is rough and seasonal — high-clearance 4WD minimum, expect washouts and unbridged creek crossings. Mosquitoes are severe June through August. There’s a small USFS airstrip at Dry Bay used for river trip take-outs; no fuel, no services whatsoever. Tides and glacial outflow make the delta itself dynamic — don’t count on any fixed feature staying put season to season. Confirm road and weather conditions with USFS Tongass in Haines before committing.
Alsek's end — glacier river meets the Gulf.
