BLM Burns District — Alvord Desert Playa Edge Dispersed Camp

Pull up to the eastern edge of the Alvord Desert playa and you’ve got one of the most dramatic backdrops in the Pacific Northwest. Steens Mountain forms a sheer escarpment to the west, the playa stretches dead flat to the east, and on clear nights the sky is dark enough to make a grown overlander go quiet. No facilities, no shade, no fee. Plenty of wind. Fires are generally allowed on the playa fringe but conditions and seasonal restrictions vary — check with the BLM Burns District before you load the wood. Capacity is effectively unlimited on BLM land here.

Access is via the Folly Farm Road / Fields-Denio Road (OR-205) corridor south of Burns — the Alvord Desert turnoff tracks east toward the playa from just north of the Fields community. Road surface is dry-weather dirt; the playa itself becomes impassable when wet. Spring and fall are the best windows. Summer temps push 100°F. Zero cell signal.
